Handwriting analysis is the study of personality through the interpretation of written strokes. The basis for handwriting analysis is that we project our personality into our writing in much the same way as we show our feelings by expressions, gestures, or body movements. Gordon W. Allport, the famous Harvard psychologist said that handwriting is a “crystallized gesture”. Impulses from our brain dictate the stroke formation. It could be called “brainwriting”.

Our writing is as unique as our fingerprints, voice, body and even the iris of our eyes! Although we learned to write in school in a similar way, each person has evolved a writing style as unique as his or her personality. No two writings are exactly alike. Each time we write a sentence or sign our name, we draw a picture of ourselves. Every writing is a “self-portrait” of the writer.

WHAT CAN HANDWRITING ANALYSIS TELL ME?

It can describe a personality, identify specific character traits, and highlight outstanding or unusual qualities. It can reveal personal style, motivation, and give insight in critical areas unavailable from other sources. It shows how strongly or not you utilized defense mechanisms as well.

HOW WILL HANDWRITING ANALYSIS HELP ME?

It will help you solve “people” problems. It will save you time by giving you an up-front evaluations of a person’s strengths and weaknesses. It will shorten the time it takes to get to know someone, and help you interview more thoroughly and effectively.

It will save money by helping you make the right decisions for the first time and avoid expensive mistakes. You will save hiring and training costs through reduced turnover. It will help you increase productivity because you will understand employees better and be able to manage them more effectively.

WHAT ABOUT HANDWRITING THAT CHANGES?

As we change, our writing changes. A certain amount of variation in a handwriting is normal. Like facial expressions, which change constantly, these variations do not make a person’s writing unrecognizable. Long-term permanent changes are also natural, as they reflect the writer’s growth and development. Our writing samples provide a visual history of the development of our lives emotionally, physically and mentally.

HOW CAN HANDWRITING ANALYSIS BE USED?

It can be used anywhere where human understanding is needed. (Is that not everywhere?) In business, it can be used to help evaluate applicants that are best suited for the job. Use it to gain insight on how to work with, or help develop your employees, and as a tool to determine who to promote. On a personal basis, it can increase understanding between parents and children or husband and wife.

HOW ACCURATE IS IT?

The validity of handwriting analysis as a means of personality assessments has been established for years. The Encyclopedia Britannica Library Research Service has stated…”no other projective technique offers the marked advantage of handwriting analysis as a sole means of personality assessment”. Dr. James Crumbaugh, clinical Psychologist, stated: “Handwriting analysis is as well validated as many other techniques and, in fact, has definite advantages over most other clinical tests”. Numerous research studies have been performed on handwriting since the 1830’s.

Handwriting analysis is not an exact science, such as mathematics, but a subjective science like medicine or psychology.

The lower zone gives information on our instinctual drive of survival, material needs, sexual needs, and more.

The Letter “g”

The ‘g’ begins with an oval in the mz (middle zone) followed by a lower loops turning to the left. It represents our feelings about our subconscious self compared to our self-identity. A completed loop shows emotional responsibility and retention of memories. The copybook ‘g’ shows a cautious guarded attitude about one’s self-image and an immature discomfort about one’s emotional and sexual expression in the real world.

The mz (middle zone) oval is the focus for one’s sexuality and its shape will show how successful the individual has been in finding a mate. The lz loops displays the individual’s feelings about their intimate love life and if the loops is completed, the individual feels relatively fulfilled in a dependent relationship.

I have a whole booklet of various formations and below are two which shows the lower zone not returning to the baseline meaning the drives get hung up in the subconscious; the person can’t act and bring things to fulfillment; guilt; stubborn; frustration and more.

Angles give decisiveness, restriction, closing off, backbone. Curves give yieldingness, openness, warmth. As with everything in handwriting, it is about BALANCE. We need some of each. Too curved, and we yield to much, have no backbone. Too angular and we are harsh, not open to others. Note block printing is very angular and is also a “persona writing.”

Otto von Bismarck, known as the “Iron Chancellor,” orchestrated the unification of Germany in 1871. The dominant political force of 19th-century Europe, he built the modern German state and pioneered the first welfare system in the Western world, largely to neutralize the rising influence of socialism. He is a Seven of Spades. The central challenge of this card is learning to recognize and wield personal power without being consumed by it. Bismarck’s life is a study in exactly that tension.

The Dalai Lama is a Nine of Diamonds. The core challenge of this card is trusting in something beyond material gain and false idols. By most accounts, he has met that challenge with rare consistency.

I have spent over thirty years studying handwriting, and I hold an MA in Jungian psychology with a thesis chaired by James Hollis, which I am very proud of. In that time, I have come to believe the ppI is one of the most concentrated pieces of psychological evidence a person carries. It is the one letter in the alphabet that exists only to represent the self. The ppI is the self, rendered in ink, usually without your permission and certainly without your editing. It records what has actually been operating, often for decades, without commentary.

Why this matters more than you think

Do you, or someone you love, repeat the same patterns no matter how hard you try? Do you give endlessly to others but find it almost impossible to receive? Do you feel like you or your partner disappears in relationships, pulls away without quite meaning to?

These are not random difficulties. They point to the way you see yourself at the deepest level, and that self-image was formed earlier than you can consciously remember, shaped by the people who raised you and the defenses you built to survive what you needed from them.

And what you carry from that does not stay contained to you. An unexamined self-image rarely stops at the boundary of one person. It becomes the thing your partner has to navigate, the thing your child learns to anticipate, the thing your closest friends quietly work around without ever naming it. We tend to think of self-image as a private matter. It rarely stays private. It is often the hardest thing the people who love us have to live with.

I know this because I have lived it, and because I have spent decades reading it in other people’s handwriting.

A brief, honest admission

I keep a chronological record of my own ppI across my life. Revisiting it is not easy. A twisted upper loop and an acquisition hook at eleven, written through a deeply unhappy stretch of childhood and issues with a mother that was critical and harsh. A leftward swing and an emotionally responsive slant in my twenties, written through a marriage, a disappointment, and a habit of using alcohol to manage what I could not yet name. The wide spacing around my own independent I tells my story now. There is a need for personal space in that writing, and underneath it, a certain loneliness. It is a long way from the emotionally hungry person of my youth, searching for the connection my parents could not quite provide. I still want that connection. I simply need it to go somewhere real — someone interested in the interior, in depth, in what lives underneath the warmth and the laughter.

Years of deliberate interior work followed, studying my own ego structure, my defense mechanisms, the family dynamics I had absorbed without knowing it. Additionally, somewhere in my thirties, working with an esteemed handwriting analyst who mentored me for years, I changed my ppI to a straight stick formation. The shift was not cosmetic. Writing it differently was a daily act of intention, a physical decision to release a parental grip I had been recording in ink since childhood without realizing it.

The handwriting does not lie, and it does not always flatter. That is the point. What I see in nearly every sample I read are the hurts, defenses, and insecurities we all carry. We are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be on a journey of becoming, one step at a time. All we really need is the capacity to be honest with ourselves, openness to change and willingness to do the work. I know that is a stumbling block for many as I literally can see it in writing. People so strongly identifying with their denial (and they don’t know they are) will find this type of information threatening to their carefully constructed ego; that part of us that wants to be safe, unbothered, always happy, distracted and more. It is really only for the brave souls that are interested in self development that can absorb the information in this book.

If you can learn to see the pattern running through someone else’s, including mine, you can learn to see it in your own, and in the people closest to you.

That one letter is the only symbol in the English language that refers exclusively to the self. Every other word points outward. This one points back. And what you do with it, the size you give it, the slant, the pressure, the shape, whether the parental symbols within it are balanced or absent or dominant, tells a story your conscious mind did not authorize.

This is what analytic graphology understands that standard handwriting analysis often misses. It is not enough to describe what a formation looks like. The real question is what psychological truth produced it.

The handwriting does not defend itself.

When you speak about yourself, the ego is present. It edits, manages, softens, reframes. When you write, something else is happening. The stroke is a gesture. The page is the space you move through. And the personal pronoun “I” is where the deepest layer of self-concept, the one that was installed long before you had language for it, leaves its mark.

I have been studying, teaching, and practicing analytic graphology for over thirty years. In that time I have looked at thousands of handwriting samples across cultures, generations, and life circumstances. And again and again, it is the personal pronoun “I” that tells me the most in the least time.

Not because it is magic. Because it is evidence.

What it can show you:

Whether your sense of self-worth is proportionate, compressed, or inflated. How you carry your mother and your father, not as memories but as structure. Whether you are living primarily through repression, regression, or fixation, and what that costs you in your relationships. Whether the pattern you keep repeating with partners, with family, with authority figures, is visible on the page long before it surfaces in your life.

Sometimes it is easier to see these patterns in others than in ourselves. A partner whose handwriting you recognize. A child whose formation mirrors something you have been trying to understand. A parent whose dynamic with you suddenly makes sense when you see what their own “I” has been recording.

The handwriting does not know it is being watched. That is the whole point.

I have spent the last months building something I wish had existed when I began this work.

With today being the 4th of July and the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed a fitting moment to revisit a post from my old blog, “Reading Gestures,” written on George Washington’s handwriting. The baseline is the feature I want to look at. It may be the most psychologically telling element in all of graphology.

The baseline is either a real or an imaginary line beneath each letter, the line on which the lowercase middle-zone letters sit. It is the line of reality, the ground upon which the writer walks. It divides the middle and upper zones above from the lower zone below, and it is the first thing I look at when I want to understand how someone organizes themselves in the world.

A relatively straight, level baseline indicates dependability, consistency, and a logical, steady approach to goals. The direction of the line, whether it ascends, descends, or holds steady across the page, reveals the writer’s mood and how well that mood is being managed. When a writer’s baseline is rigidly straight, emotion is tightly controlled, sometimes to the point that no one around them ever knows what they are feeling. When the baseline is erratic, emotion moves through unchecked.

The baseline is the ego adjustment system. It reflects moral and social control, individual mood level, temperament, and flexibility in approaching life’s experiences. Whether a writer chooses lined or unlined paper matters here too. A writer who insists on lined paper uses the structure as an anxiety management system. One who refuses to write on lines at all may have difficulty with external structure in general.

Washington’s handwriting shows a level, steady baseline. He can set a goal and see it through, which the historical record confirms. The writing is simple, neat, and carefully executed, indicating clear thinking and the ability to communicate directly. The occasional flat connections between letters suggest some underlying anxiety, though it does not disrupt the overall picture. What does support the picture is the consistency of slant, an indicator of consistent emotional expression. The writing is mostly connected, breaking where it should, marking him as a logical, sequential thinker.

Most striking is the “th” connection, where Washington links those two letters through the upper zone in a fluid arc. This formation is associated with creative, flowing thought, not the handwriting of a purely literal mind. He confirms this again in how he connects the letter “d” to the letter that follows it, as in the word “Wednesday,” a small but telling detail.

There is something worth sitting with in the comparison between Washington’s hand at nineteen and his signature as president. At age nineteen, the capitals reach. They are ambitious in the way that young ambition always is, before it has been tested, before the person inside them has had to reckon with what they actually cost. By the time he held the office, the capitals had come into proportion. Not smaller, not diminished. Proportioned. That is the word graphology uses, and it is the right one. What the writing shows is not a man who had his ambition beaten out of him by circumstance, but one who had grown large enough that the ambition no longer had to announce itself. The signature of a president does not need to prove anything. The signature of a nineteen-year-old still does.

That movement, from reaching to inhabiting, is what maturity looks like in the writing. It is also what it looks like in a life.

What deserves particular attention is that the earlier sample was written at age nineteen. Handwriting cannot reveal chronological age, but it does reveal emotional age. Washington’s writing at nineteen carries a maturity that is genuinely rare. The baseline held then too, which tells us the emotional ground was already being built, long before the office, the war, or the weight of what he would be asked to carry.

The image with the phi ratio overlay is my own measurement tool, used to assess the proportional relationship between the three zones of handwriting: the upper zone, associated with thinking and ideation; the middle zone, the zone of daily life, ego, and relationship; and the lower zone, connected to instinct, drive, and the physical world. Zonal proportion is the subject of my graduate research, and it is something I return to consistently in my graphological work. I will write more on this in future articles.

Certainly there is much more to comment on but for this article I wanted to share the guiding image of his writing; that quality that we notice which is mirrored in the personality.

Looking at these two samples, the contrast is stark. Between these two extremes, you can see exactly who carries an inflated sense of self-importance and who doesn’t.

The page itself is the starting point. It represents our world, and how a person moves across it, where they place their marks and how much space they claim, reveals how they experience their place in that world.

Large writing signals someone who needs more space, in every sense. You don’t miss this person at a gathering. They respond to praise, perform better when they know they’re being watched, and tend to shift focus quickly toward whatever feels most relevant to them in the moment. There’s genuine energy here: outgoing, animated, courageous, capable of generosity and enthusiasm. But the shadow side is pronounced. Pretentiousness, grandiosity, a pull toward the ceremonial and luxurious. These are people who are extravagant in everything and restless in most things.

This is inflation, and analytical psychology would recognize it as compensation. The ego requires constant feeding precisely because the underlying sense of self is more fragile than the display suggests. Objectivity suffers. Details get skipped. As the writing grows larger, the need for external validation grows with it. This is the person who begins rearranging other people’s lives without being asked, not from confidence, but from the compulsion to remain significant.

Small writing tells the opposite story. Energy turns inward. The person neither needs nor seeks an audience and tends toward projects that don’t require much contact with others. What they offer instead is precision and observation. They notice what others miss. The ego steps back, and with it, the noise.

But small writing carries its own compensatory logic. The withdrawal from visibility can reflect not modesty but a learned contraction, a self that decided it is safer not to be seen. That is worth naming alongside the genuine gifts of focus and restraint.

Both poles are compensatory responses to the same wound: an uncertain relationship with one’s own worth. The large writer performs significance because he cannot simply inhabit it. The small writer disappears because visibility once cost too much. Neither is integration. The handwriting shows you where someone is on that path. It doesn’t tell you whether they’ve started walking it.

Biographers have occasionally speculated that the famous film director Alfred Hitchcock possessed repressed homosexual tendencies. An analysis of his handwriting signature reveals a distinct balance between contraction and release between logos (reason) and eros (passion). This graphological trait suggests he may have been deeply in touch with both his masculine and feminine qualities.

The cursive elements and horizontal expansion within his signature indicate a strong connection to his anima. If the broader body of his handwriting mirrors his signature, it would suggest that psychological repression was not a dominant factor. The signature exhibits a high degree of spontaneity; assuming his general handwriting aligns with this trait, the theory of "repression" would be contradicted. Instead, these graphological patterns suggest a personality that leans toward impulsivity.

Our body of writing is who we truly are; the signature is how we want to appear to others. We would need a full sample of his writing to see if there is congruence between how he presents and who he really is.

Also note the fluid, creative connection between his first and last name, indicating a mind that flows almost effortlessly from thought to thought as well as being highly creative. His high flying t-bar (we would need to measure many more for a fuller picture) indicates idealism, vivid imagination, strong desire for achievement and also a lack of grounding. Again - looking at one is not an adequate sample size.

Hitchcock’s Birth Card is an Ace of Diamonds. Being he was born August 13th at 3:15 a.m. his card is the card for August 12th because astrologically the new day starts at sunrise.

Just as a person that reaches out to another indicated by the sketch above showing someone moving towards, their writing will reflect that in their slant.

We look at adherence to or departure from the school model for slant. This reveals the writer’s degree of emotional responsiveness or respective lack of it. Note: slant does not indicate the depth nor the sincerity of a person’s feeling; it merely reveals how much emotion is likely to show on the surface. There are meanings for all of the various possibilities. As in most everything in handwriting, we gain insight from the symbolism of space.

This example contains a couple of important fears and defenses that I have marked.

First, as you can see by the green lines, the middle zone upslant of this sample borders between rightward and extreme rightward. This gives clues as to the writer's initial emotional response to another person or situation without the modifying influence of conscious controls. It is more significant than upper or lower zone slants because the middle zone is related to the writer's social attitudes and his observable behavior.

This writer responds immediately on the emotional level, with ability to be excitable and demonstrative. The writer becomes emotionally involved with anything that attracts interest. This writer is subjective in thinking and can be easily hurt by perceived coldness or disinterest in others.

Note the red circles showing the very high rising finals at the ends of all of the words. Think of the body language of someone waving their hand, as if trying to capture someone's attention. Graphologically, the same meaning applies, as their is a unfulfilled need for attention, along with feeling of abandonment. Supporting this note the overlapping word spacing indicated by the 3 magenta lines. This person has a fear of being alone - as there is no room between final and initial strokes.

This person is highly subjective in her thinking - emotions flood her, leaving no room for logic. Present are controls within her seen in the steady baseline and pride. Highly likely, she is drawn to highly logical, emotionally aloof partners, bringing a sense of balance.

Her personal pronoun “I” shows with the separated upper and lower loops that she is very protective of her innermost feelings and needs support.

Graphology, or handwriting analysis, doesn’t lie. It is unfiltered, uncontaminated information about who we really are and who we try to project ourselves to be.

You can tell a lot from a single letter, especially when that letter is the personal pronoun “I”. The “I” is the most significant letter in the English alphabet because it signifies your private attitude about your inner self and others. This single letter is a key indicator of some very important information including the importance/influence of the male and female authority figures (typically mother and father) in your life. People with distinct “I’s” have something distinct in their personality.

Note now infamous Ted Bundy’s ppI (personal pronoun I). Notice the overemphasis on the top, mother are of the upper loop. His view of women was not only unrealistic, but it also had no father influence for balance as evidenced by no stroke formation in the lower, left area.

Sample A is driven by ambition and a strong attachment to external validation, such as titles, status, and wealth. In contrast, Sample B demonstrates healthy adaptability, living intentionally rather than following inherited expectations..

James Hollis once referenced a line by Emily Dickinson that stopped me:
'The sailor cannot see the north, but knows the needle can.'

Emily Dickinson wrote one of the most compressed, interior bodies of poetry in the English language. She also rarely left her house. By the last decades of her life, she had withdrawn almost entirely from social contact, communicating with the world largely through slipped notes and the poetry itself. She was intimate with language in a way she could not be, or would not be, with people.

She left behind her handwriting, too. And the handwriting tells a story the poems only gesture at.

The Hand Reveals What the Mind Conceals

Most people are surprised by how much information lives in the gesture of handwriting. We tend to think of writing as a communication tool — words carrying meaning from one person to another. But before meaning, there is movement. And movement is psychological.

The science of expressive gesture rests on a principle that appears across cultures and disciplines: as within, so without. Every muscle movement carries information about the inner state of the person making it. Body language, facial expression, gait, and handwriting are variations on the same signal. They are unfiltered, largely unconscious, and remarkably consistent.

Handwriting originates not in the hand but in the brain. Neural impulses from the subconscious direct the hand’s movement on paper. Gordon Allport at Harvard, who conducted controlled experiments on expressive movement and personality in the 1930s, concluded that handwriting is a “crystallized form of gesture” — a prism that reflects the inner organization of the whole person. Ania Teillard, a psychoanalyst who worked closely with Jung for over two decades, was the first to map the relationship between depth psychology and graphology directly, showing how Jung’s psychological types, the functions, the attitudes, the tension between Ego and Self, could be read in the stroke itself.

What this means practically: the piece of paper is a symbolic representation of the writer’s world. How a person moves across it — where they cluster, where they expand, how tightly or loosely they hold the pen, how they connect or refuse to connect one letter to the next mirrors how they move through life.

The Polarity Principle

The psyche operates on polarity. Expansion and contraction. Openness and defense. The pull toward connection and the pull toward self-protection. A person doing genuine inner work, living more from Self than from Ego, will show this in their writing: not too constricted, not too loose, neither frantically connected nor fragmented into isolation. There is aliveness and ease in such writing. The strokes are integrated. Nothing is working too hard.

When the Ego is running the show — when fear, unresolved wounding, or psychic defense is organizing the personality — the handwriting shows the strain. Pressure becomes either crushing or nearly absent. Spacing collapses into overcrowding or blows open into disconnection. Letterforms tighten, or coil, or fall away from the baseline. The writing tells you something the person may not be able to say, because they do not yet fully know it themselves.

This is what makes graphology genuinely useful as a psychological tool. It is not a personality quiz. It is the body’s record of where the energy is blocked, defended, or free — the difference between a person living from their higher expression and one contracted into their lower one made visible on paper before the person has decided what to show.

Emily Dickinson: What the Writing Knows

When you look at Dickinson’s handwriting, particularly the samples from her later life (sample #2 above), the guiding image is immediate: the space. The gaps between her letters are unusually wide. Words float apart from one another. Whatever the content of what she was writing, the physical gesture on the page tells a different story than the poetry’s compression suggests. It shows someone who needed enormous amounts of space around herself — who could not tolerate the closeness that ordinary social life requires.

And yet her letterforms slant sharply to the right, the direction associated with emotional expressiveness, the reach toward others. Here is the polarity made graphic: a person who longed for deep connection and could not make it. The writing holds both truths simultaneously, without resolution. The coiled quality of many of her strokes, letters that wrap back into themselves, reflects what she could not give outward: an intense, recursive inner life turning constantly on itself, energy that circulates without landing anywhere.

The pressure of her writing is light. In graphological terms, this indicates sensitivity, impressionability, a person who registers everything and for whom the world outside easily becomes too much. Light pressure is often associated with a strong spiritual and intuitive nature, which her poetry bears out entirely. It also indicates fragility, limited stamina for the demands of ordinary engagement. The drops in her baseline, the disconnections between letters, suggest depressive episodes alongside the brilliance.

What we are looking at is the lower expression of a highly sensitive, deeply gifted person. Not lower in any moral sense. But she was living from the defended position: the self turned inward, creativity coiled rather than extended, connection longed for but impossible to sustain. The needle pointed true north. The sailor stayed in the harbor.

What We Can See in Ourselves

The pattern Dickinson embodied in isolation has become, in some ways, a collective one. The retreat inward. The desire for connection alongside the difficulty of sustaining it. The self-involvement that is not narcissism exactly, but a kind of psychic coiling, energy that circulates without landing.

We have largely stopped writing in cursive. Most people under forty print, if they write by hand at all. This matters more than it sounds. The connections between letters in cursive writing are not merely aesthetic. They reflect and reinforce the capacity for connected thinking: for following a thought through to its conclusion, for linking one idea to the next in a continuous, integrated chain. Printers tend to produce writing that is more fragmented — each letter a discrete unit, each word a separate island.

What our handwriting is showing collectively looks a great deal like what Dickinson’s showed individually. Isolated, desirous of connection, self-involved, independent to the point of disconnection. The irony is that we have never been more technically connected. The longing underneath for real contact, for being genuinely known, for presence that is not mediated, has never been louder. The handwriting is just honest about it in a way our behavior is not.

The difference between the defended self and the open one is not a personality type. It is a matter of where the energy is going, inward to protect, or outward to meet. Both leave a record in the stroke. The higher expression of any soul type shows in writing that is alive, integrated, neither grasping nor withdrawn. The lower expression, the fear-organized self, shows in the extremes: the coil, the gap, the pressure that is either too heavy or too light.

Dickinson’s line points exactly here: the sailor cannot see the north, but knows the needle can. She knew it. Her writing shows us that she knew it, and that she could not, or would not, follow where it pointed.

The question her handwriting leaves open is the same one I find in depth psychology at every turn: what would it cost you to let the needle lead?
